Jocelyn Whipple – Element 23 founder: Top 3 Good Fashion tips

June 22, 2011 6:00 pm

So, we creep ever closer to one of A Good Week’s flagship events – Good Fashion Perspectives, taking place tomorrow evening. Not only will we be showcasing the clothes of some of the most talented and exciting sustainable and ethical fashion designers around, but we will be joined by some Good Fashion experts who are eager to enlighten us on how we can all contribute to a sustainable world through the fashion choices we make! And one of those experts is Jocelyn Whipple.

Jocelyn is the founder of Element23, a sustainable fashion brand sales agency. Jocelyn has more than 10 years experience across the sustainable fashion and textile sector, with extensive knowledge of the complex and continually developing definitions, ‘eco’ and ‘ethical’ textiles and fashion – a critical new arena in the global fashion industry. Here, she shares her top tips for Good Fashion:

1. Always ask questions about the things you are buying including clothing – even if they cannot be answered or the answers are startling! By informing ourselves about supply chains we become better equipped to make wardrobe choices that reflect our own sense of value whatever that may be.

2. Slow down your personal style – take time to really get to grips with what does and doesn’t work for you –including colour, shape, texture, family traditions, and of course ethics. With a clear criteria we can become more discerning and focused and avoid impulse buys or wasteful spending that doesn’t serve us or the planet.

3. Read the new book just out by Lucy Siegle called ‘To Die For’ – Is fashion wearing out the world? Available at Waterstones or the Guardian online shop.
