Thursday Event Highlights

June 23, 2011 8:00 am

We’ve made it to the half way point and the Good just keeps on coming! Today’s highlights are all about sharing, connecting and thinking about the world we live in…

Spark+Mettle’s Online Coffee Break Class
From 11am [GMT] and onwards, join Spark+Mettle’s fourth Online Coffee-Break class, live on Vimeo! Today’s class is ‘How to ask good questions’ with BBC3 presenter, Cherry Healey… if you’re heading into a job interview anytime soon this is a perfect class for you!

The School of Life presents… A Good Day for the World
In today’s session Roman Krznaric reveals how empathy – the art of stepping into the shoes of another person and seeing the world from their perspective – can not only enrich your own life but also help create radical social change. Drawing on everything from the latest neuroscience research to the empathy experiments of George Orwell, from the struggle against slavery in the eighteenth century to the Middle East crisis today, you will discover that expanding your empathy is the ultimate extreme sport for twenty-first century living.

Good Fashion Perspectives
Amisha Ghadiali and A Very Good Company bring you an evening discussion on sustainability and ethical fashion. If you’ve been thinking about your wardrobe and how you can start to upcycle your clothes or you just love Good fashion, this event is for you. The Good Week team will be there too so it’s a great opportunity to stop by and say hi.

The event features fab speakers including:

— Nin Castle – Founder, GoodOne (@Goodone_Tweets)
— Elizabeth Laskar – Ethical Fashion and Fair Trade Consultant
— Ilaria Pasquinelli – Ethical Fashion Forum Consultant
— Chistian Smith – Sustainability Manager, (@ASOS)
— Jocelyn Whippie – Founder, Element 23

The panel discussion will be followed by a Q&A and an opportunity for networking. We are also very please to welcome Emily Wilkinson of Mindful Maps, who will be visually documenting the event. Guests are also asked to wear at least one item of clothing which you feel represents Good Fashion, and tell us why it’s Good in our interactive photobooth!

Watch and learn online with The RSA
Today’s talk is about our online experience and the realization that it’s undergoing an invisible revolution. Rapidly and silently a radical process of personalisation is taking place, as each website we visit collects our personal data and tailors itself to us. Increasingly we will live in a “filter bubble” – our own unique information universe, where all the news we will see will be defined by where we live, what we earn and who our friends are.

During this live event you’ll hear from Online pioneer Eli Pariser. He believes this trend has profound consequences for our democracy, transforming the way we consume information, shaping what we know, how we learn and interact.

Eli Pariser is a founder of Avaaz.org, one of the world’s largest citizen organisations, and is now President of the five-million member MoveOn.org.

The event will be chaired by Aleks Krotoski, academic, journalist and host of the Guardian’s Tech Weekly.
